Puerto de la Cruz is known as the tourist centre of the island.
An old colonial town known to many tourists from all over Europe.
For many people it is a holiday destination to escape to from the long cold winter nights.
A nice feature of Puerto de la Cruz is the way it's managed to keep itself from turning into a concrete jungle.
The old part which is the core of the old colonial town, is a network of tree lined avenidas (roads) which are typical of Spain.
These roads are often narrow and winding with shady plazas and steps running from one level to another.
Puerto de la Cruz Tenerife as a tourist resort dates back long before the 20th century boom in mass tourism.
Many people have been visiting Puerto de la Cruz for warmer climates throughout the winter seasons.
The port in Puerto de la Cruz was one of the two main ports of the island.
The port was generally used for the export of wine and as a fishing port for the Canarians.
Due to expansion through the main shipping port for Tenerife is now Santa Cruz.
Puerto de la Cruz is a shoppers paradise (although not as good as Santa Cruz).
A large variety of goods are available from many of the shops and generally at a good price.
Like all of the Canary Islands electronic and perfumes are amongst the cheapest.
However, please be careful when buying electronic goods from any shops.
From Puerto de la Cruz you will normally have a view of Mount Teide and the surrounding area is filled with lush green gardens / botanical gardens.
There are a few tourist attractions within this area including the most well known of all Loro Parque.
Other attractions to this area are many botanical gardens, Pueblo Chico (miniature model of places around Tenerife and the Canary Islands).
In the main part of the town you will find a large shopping area which is filled with shops, restaurants, bars, arcades and you will find a very impressive Lido along the main walkway.
There is a very small beach in the main town which is black sand and is sheltered a little from the wind and the main sea.
