Vilamoura Golf Courses
Let’s start with the oldest first. Make your way to Vilamoura and you will find the Oceanico Old Course, which was designed by Frank Pennink.
This is one of the earliest to be opened in the Algarve (unveiled in 1969), as well as being a name familiar with golfers the world over.
Its 18 holes are spread across undulating terrain and nestled among pine trees, and trying to make sure your shot isn’t scuppered by said trees is an excellent challenge!

If you’re heading to the east of the region, Monte Rei North is the ultimate course to stop at.
It is a championship Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that’s got a pretty impressive location – on one side, the Atlantic Ocean, on the other, the Serra do Caldeirão Mountains.
What’s really interesting about this one is that 11 of its 18 holes feature water, so it’s pretty unique and distinctive.
And, obviously, it’s a nice challenge if you’re keen to test your skills – just be prepared to lose a few balls in the water!
Quinta do Lago Golf Courses
Over in the Quinta do Lago, you’ll find what is often referred to as the Algarve’s best golf course – San Lorenzo.
This has hosted the Portuguese Open loads of times (which, obviously, has helped its reputation as a golfing mecca).
Being situated next to the Ria Formosa nature reserve, it’s a really scenic place to play, dotted with lakes, pine trees and private villas.
It’s a par-72 course that was opened in 1988 and each hole has three tee locations.
This is a nice touch, since it gives you more freedom to experience the game in your own way.
Vale do Lobo Golf Courses
Vale do Lobo was the first resort to be created in the Algarve, and today it’s home to two fantastic courses – one of which is featured on virtually every Algarve golfing ad because it’s so spectacular.
The first of the two is known as the Ocean and, as you probably guessed from the name, it’s got some great views of the water.
It runs all the way down to the beach, as well as being positioned alongside a nature reserve, so expect some great scenery while you’re here.
The Royal, meanwhile, is similarly scenic, but offers distinctly different views and challenges.
This is the course that’s often featured on golfing ads – hole 16, more specifically.
It’s the most spectacular hole on the course, thanks to its amazing cliff-top carryover.
So, if you’re looking for something unique, this is definitely the course to choose.
It’s got 18 holes in total and was designed by Rocky Roquemore, something of a legend in the world of golf course design.
So, these are the ultimate courses to check out during your holiday, and you’re likely to find they’re among the most scenic you’ve ever played at.
